Photograph before anything moves
Wide shots of each affected room and close-ups of affected materials, taken before contents are moved or materials removed, are the most difficult records to recreate later.
Record the basics
Note when the damage was discovered, what the apparent source was, and what steps were taken immediately, such as closing a valve or arranging a plumber.
Keep the technical record
Moisture readings, drying logs, photographs of removed materials and a description of the work completed give an insurer a clear picture of the loss and the response.
Coverage decisions rest with your insurer; documentation simply makes the situation easier to review.
